This comes not long after every Labour councillor voted to give themselves increases of up to 37 per cent in their allowances.

Council tax payers across the City are set to face an inflation-busting 4.95 per cent rise in their bills.

Campaigners have said in the local press that as pensions are only going up by the rate of inflation, the elderly will struggle to make ends meet. This comes not long after every Labour councillor voted to give themselves increases of up to 37 per cent in their allowances.

Councillor Roger Blackmore, speaking on behalf of the Liberal Democrat group, told Focus and local press, "It is clear that, by spending money this financial year on things like massive increases in members' allowances and increased bureaucracy, Labour has failed to make the necessary savings to keep council tax below the rate of inflation, as our previous administration did for three successive years.

"However, Labour dresses it up. They are asking council tax payers to stump up an increase twice the rate of inflation."
