RESIDENTS of the West End area of Leicester are to be offered a free security and fire safety package.

The West End Burglary Reduction Project will be launched in a three-day event at The Concourse, Bede Park, Western Boulevard, starting on Wednesday, November 9th.

With funding provided by the Safer Leicester Partnership, the renewal and grants section of Leicester City Council's housing department is working in partnership with the Leicestershire Constabulary and the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.

The project aims to reduce domestic burglaries and fatalities through house fires by offering, without charge, a package of measures including:

• free home security survey

• free fitting of identified security measures

• free fitting of smoke detectors

• free home fire safety check

Security measures offered include window locks, five lever mortise door locks, door chains, door viewers, window alarms, shed locks, bars, padbolts, padlocks, and personal attack alarms.

To qualify, residents should be owner-occupiers or tenants of Leicester City Council, housing associations or private landlords.

Eligible applicants include residents who consider themselves to be vulnerable to domestic burglary or fire, including the over-60s, disabled people, lone parents, and victims of domestic burglary or fire.

The qualifying area for phase one of the project is bounded by Western Road, Bisley Street, Ivy Road, Narborough Road and Celt Street. A second phase is planned for a wider area if funding permits.

The project will be launched at The Concourse, next to the Quay public house, on Wednesday, November 9th, between 8am and 6pm, and on Thursday and Friday, November 10th and 11th, between 2pm and 6pm.
