Cllr Suleman said, "The Muslim community wanted to send a message that it has been extremely moved by the plight of the people caught up in the floods."
Leicester Mosques raised more than £5,000 after Friday prayers to help those caught up in the flood disaster, They have also organised transport and donations of bottled water to people in the Gloucestershire area.
Water has been donated by a cash and carry, which wished to remain anonymous. The money raised by the Mosques will pay for a truck-load of bottles to be sent next week.
Lib Dem Councillor Hussein Suleman who was one of the organisers of the aid mission told local press, "The Muslim community wanted to send a message that it has been extremely moved by the plight of the people caught up in the floods. All the city's mosques announced on Friday they wanted to raise funds to send water and the response has been astonishing. The first three mosques raised more than £2,500 themselves and it took some time for us to add up the final total from seven others. We are sending a team of 18 people to hand out the water to these people, who are in desperate need of help."
