July 9, 2007 10:27 AM
Cllr. Suleman

Cllr. Suleman told local press, "We've got to be very careful that we do not create circumstances that are the domestic equivalent of Guantanamo Bay."

Thousands of residents across the city have signed a petition against the Government's proposed tough new anti-terror laws.

The Labour Government has been discussing giving the police powers to stop and question anyone in the UK. Anyone who refused to give their name or explain what they were doing could be charged with obstructing the police and fined up to £5,000.

Cllr. Suleman told local press, "We've got to be very careful that we do not create circumstances that are the domestic equivalent of Guantanamo Bay.

Cllr. Suleman has also asked the city council to support a motion to write to the Labour Government objecting to the legislation being considered. He said, "I'm asking the council chamber to send a very strong message to the Government to say that we object strongly. We are a progressive city, we are a progressive community, this city should make a stand."

Cllr. Suleman is backed by his Liberal Democrat colleague, Parmjit Singh Gill, who told local press, "Anybody who may look like they're not white indigenous Brits could be affected."
