A partnership involving the police and Lib Dem led Leicester City Council has been one of the first in the country to introduce a single non-emergency number - offering action and advice on crime and anti-social behaviour around the clock was launched on Monday.

The SNEN will provide members of the public with a 'one-stop shop' for community safety advice, information and action.

There are four main aims - to reduce the burden on the 999 system, to enable easier access for customers, to share information and to increase public confidence.

Cllr Carlym Sandringham, the Cabinet Member for Crime and Disorder said: "This new number will reduce the burden on the 999 system, however, don't forget you should still call 999 when offenders are nearby, life is at risk, injury is caused or threatened or crime or disorder is in progress."
