LEICESTER City Council has been awarded four stars for its performance
over the past year, putting it among the very best councils in the
country.
The Audit Commission has published its annual Comprehensive
Performance Assessment (CPA) categories for all single tier and county
councils.
The commission awarded Leicester the highest possible rating of fourLead the Wa
stars - better than the old rating of excellence - after the council
improved on its good-rated performance of last year. Only a handful of
major cities have matched this score.
The Audit Commission also judged that the council is improving well,
showing that it believes services will get even better.
The CPA measures how well local councils are delivering and improving
services to local people.
Cllr Roger Blackmore, leader of the city council, said: "This is
excellent news for the council and for Leicester, and it demonstrates
the major improvements the council has made to services over the past
year.
"I'm never one to be complacent, but I do find it rewarding that the
city is seen to be clearly moving forward on all fronts".
We took the Council over when it was rated as only being fair. In just over two and half years we have moved the council upto the highest level possible!"
The Audit Commission looked at how the council's main services
perform, how it uses its resources, and how the council is run, to
come up with its overall rating.
It found that the council engages effectively with diverse
communities, and also commented on improvements to services for
vulnerable people, and giving value for money.
